Auto dialing burglar alarms aren’t necessarily the top of the line alarms but they do the job. Unlike some alarms, that call the security station of the company that rents you the alarm system, there is no monthly rental cost for the service. Once you purchase the equipment and put it into your home, that’s all you pay, except, of course, for your normal monthly phone bill.
In order to understand the differences between this alarm system and other types, you have to understand all of them. The lowest level of defense for your home, the alarms that make a noise if someone breaks a window or a door, simply uses sound as a deterrent to burglars. However, since you have to have a separate device for every door or window, most people simply opt for putting them on the most vulnerable windows or doors. While these are better than having no alarm, they may not provide complete protection.
Security company
The highest level of protection from burglary is the security company that provides alarms connected to your doors and windows. If there’s a break in or breech in the system, the alarm automatically calls the security company. The security company in turn, calls your home to see if everything is okay. If no-one answers, or the person answering doesn’t know the prearranged code, then the security company calls the police.
While this type of system is very good, it has two flaws. The first is the expense. There’s an initial cost for installation and after that, you pay a monthly charge for the service and rent for the equipment they installed. Some people find the cost too prohibitive. The second problem is false alarms. You may trigger a call to the police for no reason or, for instance, if a child came home from college and forgot the password or never learned it, it can trigger a fee with some systems, not to mention the embarrassment.
Because of these reasons, a lot of people now opt for the middle level of protection. This includes automatic dialing equipment or software that calls you or another prearranged number in the event of a burglary. While they aren’t perfect, they do solve many of the problems faced by other types of security systems.
Motion activated home alarm
These mid cost alarm systems have different ways of working. One system, the Motion Activated Home Alarm, uses a PIR motion sensor. PIR stands for passive infrared technology. This type of motion detector notes changes in the heat signature of the room. These changes come about by either the presence of an intruder or a fire, so it acts as a fire alarm also. The detector covers a triangular wedge of area approximately 20 feet wide at the widest point, about 30 feet from the sensor.
Once you enable the sensor, if an intruder sets off the alarm, the alarm calls you and activates a speaker that amplifies the sound. If you hear familiar noises, such as the sound of your child’s voice, you can talk to them and tell them they tripped the alarm and to call you. If, however, you hear other voices you don’t recognize, then it’s time to call the police.
Of course, you may not always be available for a phone call if a burglar decides to make a visit. You don’t have to be. The phone can call up to five numbers, so you can put in your phone number, your spouse’s phone, work phones or a neighbor’s phone number. It also has the capacity to call a pager number in addition to the five phone numbers. The party at the receiving end of the phone call has 30 seconds to listen to the intruder.
Once that 30-second period ends, the phone disconnects and then reactivates. If the motion continues, it calls again and allows you to listen for another 30 seconds. You can even speak to whomever is in the house via the speakerphone built into the system. With this feature, you’ll never have a problem with the unexpected arrival of a family member causing the arrival of the police. If it is a burglar, imagine his surprise when a disembodied voice tells him to get out of the house.
Another major benefit of this type of burglar alarm is the cost. While you have to pay for the initial alarm system, there are no future charges for the service. The system costs approximately $120 to $150 dollars, even less than the initial installation charges for the security company systems.
Many people worry about animals setting off the alarm since it is a motion detector. The motion detector auto dialer alarm does require some initial work to make certain the detector doesn’t pick up your animal and report it to you as an intruder. In order to do this, you simply unplug the phone line so you won’t call yourself while you adjust the motion sensor, so Rover isn’t a suspect for breaking and entering. A light shows you if it senses movement or heat changes. Simply adjust the motion detector until it no longer picks up the animal’s movement by either raising the unit or pointing it into another direction.
A second problem is where to put the motion detector so it’s most effective. Many people simply aim it at the front door, since statistics show that over a third of burglars enter through the front door. You might find that putting the motion detector phone in an area containing valuable equipment or assets would be more beneficial. In fact, if you keep these valuables in a specific area of the house, simply keep the door closed so your pet can’t accidently set off the alarm. These systems come as kits with everything you need to set up the system and are very easy to enable.
Wireless home security system
Another security system of this type is more deluxe and perfect for the single senior living alone. It’s called the Wireless Home Security System with Voice Auto-Dialer. It has a number of options from which to choose. You can add wireless window and door sensors as a feature or choose wireless motion detectors that dial the phone, for any room or open area.
If you want to add fire protection, a wireless smoke alarm accessory connects to the system, which sounds a built-in alarm at home, as it dials one of the preprogrammed numbers. If you believe that a loud siren and flashing red strobe is the perfect deterrent to a burglary, add this accessory and besides the auto dialed numbers on your list, your neighbors will know there’s activity at your home. You can add a glass break accessory that detects vibration on glass panels.
Wireless remote keypad
The best part of this system is the wireless remote keypad. You can activate the system and deactivate it from anywhere. However, it also has a panic button to press that triggers a phone call to your preprogrammed numbers. This feature is perfect for the senior that needs not only protection from fire and burglary but for those that want help in the event of a fall or other unforeseen occurrence. It can replace a service with high monthly costs and only costs a small amount extra.
